Writing the Adaptation Workshop
with Resident Playwright Alvaro Saar Rios

Do you have a favorite short story or folktale you have always wanted to turn into a play? This workshop is for you.  It is also for those who are just curious about creating a play adaptation based on original source material, such as folktales, short stories, children’s books or even songs.  

In this workshop, you will learn techniques in:

  •  adapting source material into a play, 
  • brainstorm adaptation ideas, and 
  • create a scene(or two) for your new play adaptation. 
No writing experience necessary. 

Alvaro Saar Rios has been writing adaptations for over fifteen years.  His work has been produced by various theaters, including The Alley Theatre(TX), Houston Grand Opera, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, First Stage(WI),  and Honolulu Theatre for Youth.   His award-winning play Luchadora! is published by Dramatic Publishing Inc.  Mr. Rios holds an MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen from Northwestern University.  He lives in Chicago and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.Ge
