Internships

Interning at Chicago Dramatists offers a rare chance to learn how a major play and playwright development center operates from the inside—experience not readily gained from interning for other theatres. Each quarter, we welcome a new crew ofApply online to become a Chicago Dramatists intern! interns, each of whom is treated, right off the bat, as a full-fledged member of our team... as our past interns will attest.

To be eligible for internship, you should be an undergraduate or graduate student or a recently graduated student dedicated to the development of theatre. You should also be highly organized, possess good communication skills, and be comfortable in a fast-paced, self-guided environment.

We cannot offer housing or pay to our interns, but we do offer valuable benefits, including free tickets to shows around Chicago. In addition, internship dates and work schedules are flexible. And no, you don't need a car.

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

The following interning opportunities are currently available at Chicago Dramatists.

Full-time Stage Management Intern (Assistant Stage Manager) [20-30 hours/week]

Works with the AEA Stage Manager during both the rehearsal period and the performance run. Interns gain intensive, hands-on experience in stage management and production of new works. The Assistant Stage Manager (ASM) attends all rehearsals and performances and supervises the backstage area during performances.

  • During rehearsals, the ASM performs daily setup of rehearsal space, and tracks props.
  • During performances, the ASM creates, maintains, and supervises preset of stage and scene changes, serving as Deck Manager for all technical rehearsals and performances.

The ASM also helps maintain safe and clean workspace, including rehearsal spaces and backstage area, and maintains smooth operation of productions during tech and performances. Previous stage management and/or technical theater experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have effective communication skills and be detailed oriented. He/she will also be organized, enjoy paper work, and possess the willingness to learn and work as part of a team.

Part-time Marketing and PR Intern [15-20 hours/week]

Works with Managing Director and Director of Development to create and cultivate public relations and marketing materials including, but not limited to posters and fliers, brochures, and press releases. Assists in design and implementation of all materials dealing with the public face of the company. Engages in research to better understand and target desired market segments to improve position in the market. Must be personable and comfortable on the phone. Design experience a plus but not necessary.

Full-time Administrative Intern [20-30 hours/week]

Assists the Managing Director and Administrative Assistant with the day-to-day workings of the theatre. Interns gain intensive, hands-on experience in Marketing, House Management, Company and Production Management, Project Coordination and many other crucial tasks. Applicants should be proficient in Microsoft Office and comfortable learning on computers.

Full-time Development Intern [15-20 hours/week]

Works with the Development Director to explore and secure funding opportunities for the theatre. Interns gain hands-on experience in grant research, writing and preparation, donor recognition, events organization, and presentation of the theatre to the outside world. Good writing skills required.

Part-time Artistic/Administrative Intern [15-20 hours/week]

Responsible to both the Artistic and Managing Directors. Interns coordinate performances, rehearsals, and relations with actors, directors, and playwrights. Aids in the audition process, rehearsals, and scheduling, takes notes for playwrights after our weekly staged readings, and helps the reading directors set up/take down. Helps coordinate and assist Network and Resident Playwright events, and acts as a liaison to playwrights in the area.
