Musical Theatre: The Secret Life of the American MusicalInstructor: Dramatists Guild Chicago Regional Representative Cheryl Coons
Based on Jack Viertel’s landmark book, The Secret Life of the American Musical, this 6-week class offers participants a chance to tune up their musicals-in-progress, as well as gain insight into what makes great musicals work. Participants share work for feedback in a supportive class atmosphere, and study examples from musical theatre masterworks from Gypsy to Hamilton. Each class session includes a balance of course content and presentation of participants’ work. Flexible weekly assignments allow participants to use the class presentation time in the way that is most valuable for them, by sharing work from existing projects, creating new work based on optional suggested exercises, or presenting revisions of previous work for response. Experienced writers gain new tools for refining their musicals, and newcomers to musical theatre writing gain a “big picture” perspective.
