Writing the Political or Social Play Instructor: Douglas Post—Founding Member of the Victory Gardens Playwright Ensemble
This class is specifically designed for writers seeking to sharpen their skills in writing political and social theatre. We are living through a challenging period and the arts can play a big role in raising issues and rousing communities to take action. We will start each session by studying scenes by produced playwrights that have spoken to the tenor of their times. We will then turn our attention to the work of the participants in the room, whether that is a short play, a series of short plays or a full-length work. At the end of the class, writers will have a better sense of how to write provocative theatre that is powerful and producible.
Writers should bring 11 copies of a 10-page scene from their play to their first session.
