Shortly after graduating from college, Lydia R. Diamond (formally Gartin) formed her own company, Another Small Black Theatre Company With Good Things to Say and a Lot of Nerve Productions, primarily to produce and perform her own works including: Solitaire, recipient of the Agnes Nixon Playwriting Award, The Inside, a one woman show, and Here I am...See Can You Handle It, a one-woman show adapted from the poems and writings of Nikki Giovanni, first performed at the Bailiwick's Directors Festival and later produced with A.S.B.T.C. The Inside was professionally premiered by MPAACT (The Ma'at Association of African Centered Theatre) at the Victory Gardens Theatre and then toured for three months to colleges and towns in the South East and Midwest. At Chicago Dramatists Ms. Diamond has developed and staged public readings of her most recent works including: Stage Black - Third place recipient of Theodore Ward Playwriting Award, and premiered at the Cincinnati Arts Consortium in February of 2000, and The Gift Horse part of the 2000 Women at the Door Festival at Famous Door Theatre and 1st place recipient of the Theodore Ward Playwriting Award. The Gift Horse received its world premiere at The Goodman Theatre. Ms. Diamond's most notable acting credits include: Four (Abigail) About Face Theatre Company (US Premier), Eleven Rooms of Proust Lookinglass/About Face, The Inside (Emma) MPAACT (Nominated for Best Lead Actress Black Theatre Alliance Awards), Faith and the Good Thing (Faith) City Lit & Chicago Theatre Company (Best Lead Actress BTAA). Diamond is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists, and was a founding member of Onyx Theatre Ensemble.Ms. Diamond holds a B.S. in Theatre and Performance Studies from Northwestern University, and has taught at Loyola University, Columbia College, Gallery 37, and with Chicago Dramatists Outreach Program.
