Derrell Capes graduated from Hiram College with a BA in Theatre Arts in 1972, and earned an MFA from the Professional Acting Program at the University of Denver in 1975. He moved to Chicago in 1978 and has worked as a professional actor from that time to the present, appearing in over forty productions from that time until 1996. In addition to his acting, he has been employed as a Stage Combat Master and Choreographer, and is a member of the Act One Studios faculty, having taught acting classes there since 1988.Mr. Capes began writing plays in 1990 with the initial draft of a play entitled "Merc," which received its first public reading in 1991 at the New York Defenders Association's summer seminar. Prior to that, he had written over twenty-five scripts for the Chicago based interactive theatre company, "Mystery, Inc!" Chicago Dramatists twice selected "Merc" for presentation in its Saturday Series readings.His second full length play, "Changing Rainbows," was produced by Ensemble Arts Theatre of San Diego, and Red Wolf Theatre in Chicago, directed by Richard Shavzin. "Changing Rainbows" was among four plays selected to initiate a program of staged readings by the Organic Theatre in Chicago and was performed on the evening of October 28th, 1997.On September 1st, 1998, Mr. Capes was privileged to be accepted into Chicago Dramatists Theatre's Resident Playwright Program. His full length play "Cabin Fever," received its first public hearing there on October 10th, 1998 as a part of the Saturday Afternoon Series. A collection of short plays entitled "Consanguinities: Six Vignettes in A Minor," was also read during the Saturday afternoon series in February, 2000, and will receive its premier production at Act One Studios in the spring of 2002.His most recent work, "Endangered," was selected by Stage Left Theatre's Downstage Left program, receiving a Level I treatment, directed by Steve Scott, Artistic Associate of the Goodman Theatre. A second draft of the same play was selected for Chicago Dramatists' Saturday Reading Program in June, 2001.Mr. Capes is a vested member of Actors Equity Association, and is an Associate Member of the Dramatists' Guild. He is also a member of the New York State Defenders Association, an organization involved with the training of Public Defenders in New York State.
