About Russ Tutterow
Artistic Director

Russ Tutterow has been the Artistic Director of Chicago Dramatists since 1986. At Chicago Dramatists, he has directed countless new play readings, and nurtured the art and careers of hundreds of playwrights.

Most recently, he directed Chicago Dramatists' productions of "Heat" by Marsha Estell (Jeff Award nomination for New Work), "Only the Sound" by Jenny Laird (Jeff Award for New Play), "A Blue Moon" by Joel Drake Johnson (Jeff Award nomination for New Play), "Drawing War" by Brett Neveu, and "The Prophet of Bishop Hill" by David Rush (Jeff Award nominations for New Play and Supporting Actress, and After Dark Awards for Production and New Play). He currently serves on the First Look Council for Steppenwolf Theatre and recently directed Prop Thtr's acclaimed production of "Rosemary" by Jim O'Connor, which won 2002 Jeff Citations for New Play and Actress in a Principal Role.

Mr. Tutterow has been involved in not-for-profit, commercial and educational theatre for over twenty-five years. He has directed, managed or taught for such Chicago theatres as Goodman, Victory Gardens, Royal George, Mercury, Briar Street, Prop, Zebra Crossing, Igloo, and Cullen, Henaghan & Platt Productions. During the 1970s, he was Associate Director of Chicago's Travel Light Theatre, where his direction of "P.S. Your Cat Is Dead!" earned him a Joseph Jefferson Citation recommendation. He directed Travel Light's world premiere of "Bring on the Girls," and the subsequent Los Angeles production at Cafe LaMama/Hollywood.

Mr. Tutterow has held positions as Adjunct Associate Professor of Theatre at the University of Wisconsin, and Director of Theatre (for six years) at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois. He holds an M.A. in Theatre from Northwestern University and a B.A. in Theatre from Ball State University.
