Aiming For Sainthood

About Richard Perez
Associate Artistic Director

Richard Perez recently ended his seven year tenure as the Producing Artist Director of the Bloomington Playwrights Project in Indiana. He was responsible for selecting, creating, and overseeing all aspects of production for the company. In that time he oversaw the production of over thirty new mainstage plays, with at least sixteen of those being world premieres. In his first season as artistic director, he created the Ensemble of Artists; a group of talented writers, directors and actors who have became instrumental in the day-to-day running of the company and the development of new work.

His work on new plays at the theatre includes: the development of the musical .22 Caliber Mouth by Lauren Robert (which he acted in and which eventually opened off-Broadway), the direction of Sarah Treem's Empty Sky, Susan Lieberman's Arrangement for Two Violas, John Green's The Liquid Moon, Sheila Callaghan's Kate Crackernuts, Trista Baldwin's Chicks with Dicks I and II, and Toni Press-Coffman's Holy Spirit on Grand Avenue. Other directing credits include: All My Sons, True West, Hurly Burly, The Mercy Swing (2007 New York Fringe Festival) and Nocturnal (part of the Kennedy Center's New Visions/New Voices Festival). 2009 marked his second year as a director at The Indiana Repertory Theatre for the Bonderman Symposium of New Play Development.

An actor as well, recent roles include: Gabe in Dinner with Friends and Oscar in The Odd Couple. Mr. Perez has taught acting or improvisation for The National Actor's Theatre in New York City, at Arizona State University, for Theatre Sports New York, Indiana University, the Bloomington Playwrights Project and numerous workshops around the country. He has also served on several arts boards and adjudicated for many regional and national playwriting contests.

He studied acting at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and with Uta Hagen at HB Studios in New York City. He was also an acting apprentice at the Actor's Theatre of Louisville and received a BA in Theatre from Hunter College in New York and an MFA in Performance from Arizona State University.
